What is the Violet Wand?

From the early humble roots of a device labeled as “quack” by the FDA, the Violet Wand was born. A Violet Wand is based on a Tesla coil. Avoiding the technical terms, this incredible device transforms household current into sustainable, controllable high frequency, high voltage, and low amperage electrical energy. The wondrous thing about the frequency output range of a Violet Wand is that it occurs between 400 – 500KHZ.  This range of frequencies isn’t felt by human nerves ONCE IT HAS ENTERED the body. Violet Wands emit small amounts of Ultraviolet light only at the point of the spark. Another by product of your Violet Wand is ozone.

The Violet Wand is used by the fetish or kink community for erotic and BDSM stimulation. Violet Wands can create sensations that range from gentle tingles and barely felt vibrations, to sharp shocks.

A modern Violet Wand typically consists of a hand held "wand" made of plastic. A Violet Wand electrode is usually made of clear tempered glass and is sealed and evacuated. There is often a backfill of gas, which imparts a color when the wand operates. Different gas mixtures produce different glowing colors, usually purple, red, blue, or pink. Glass electrodes also come in a variety of sizes and shapes (including probe shaped, rake shaped, curved-y shaped, mushroom shaped, or bulb-shaped). Most glass electrodes have a metal end cap which inserts directly into the electrode socket on the wand.

Solid metal electrodes (usually probe shaped) may also be used, and produce a far more intense sensation than glass electrodes.

Types of Play

Direct
Direct refers to play involving electrodes and tools inserted directly into the end of the Violet Wand. Glass Electrodes generally only work in Direct Play as the maximum amount of electricity is available to cause the electrode to glow and transmit its effect to you or your partner. The farther you hold the electrode from your partner's skin, the sharper the shock.

Indirect
Indirect is the result of connecting yourself to the output of the wand using a body probe or contact pad. These should include a spark gap for safety. The result is, your entire body becomes electrified so you can use your fingertips and other hand-held tools to send electricity to your partner. You do not feel anything except where you touch your partner or conductive objects around you. If you drag your fingertips over your partner, both of you will feel the electricity jump between you. If you have a good grip on a conductive object, like a spoon, you can cause arcs to your partner and you will not feel anything.

Reverse
Reverse play is exactly like Indirect except your partner is directly connected to the Violet Wand. This setup gives you more flexibility to move around and offers the opportunity for multiple people to ‘play’ with the person connected to the wand. They will not feel any effect while connected to the wand until someone or something conductive touches them.

Advanced
Advanced techniques are all a variation of the three techniques above. Advanced techniques include the use of the Violet Wand to brand, with needles, and with Fireplay.

Safety and the Violet Wand

This is not to scare you but so you can make an informed decision and select the level of risk you are comfortable with.

  • Violet Wands should never be inserted.
  • Make sure you use a properly installed outlet.
  • Always use a GFCI. A Violet Wand may occasionally trip the GFCI when no problem exists. This is normal as the Violet Wand creates a lot of noise and spikes in the line that can trip the GFCI. This noise and spikes can also damage sensitive electronic devices so don’t plug the wand into an outlet anywhere near a stereo, computer or other electronics.
  • You should never connect yourself, or your partner, directly to the output of the wand without including a spark gap. A spark gap is a small gap in the wire, rod, or bar that is placed between the end of the wand and the usable portion of an electrode or tool. Glass electrodes actually are a spark gap, with only the gas inside to conduct the electricity. Solid rods placed into the end of the wand should have a small gap filled with plastic, glass, or some other non-conductive material. This gap is too big for the dangerous line current coming from the wall to jump. In the event of a malfunction, the dangerous current cannot reach the usable end of the tool or electrode because of the gap. The high-voltage, high frequency electricity that we like to play with can easily jump the spark gap

Medical Safety
Violet Wand is Electrical Play!
If you have a history of

  • heart problems
  • nerve issues
  • implanted electrical device such as a
  • pace-maker
  • insulin pump
  • cochlear hearing implant

Violet Wand Play In NOT FOR YOU!

The Violet Wand can destroy electronic devices so do not use them near electronic implants. Be careful playing with diabetics and persons with other medical issues that may be negatively affected by the Violet Wand. Diabetics tend to mark and scar easily and take longer to heal. A person with a skin ailment may react badly to the application of electricity or electrical arcs.

Be aware of appliances your partner or you may have. Appliances would include items such as dentures, braces, and retainers. Other items that should be discussed are silicone breast implants and yes, possibly even adjustable lap bands with external ports. The external ports are connected to a tube filled with saline that the doctor uses to adjust the size of the band. Wand contact there could cause an internal arc up the saline.

Wand safety

  • Make sure your wand is in good shape and does not have a cracked casing or worn wiring.
  • Never use a wand near or in water or other liquids.
  • Never use near your cell phone.
  • Never expose the eyes or eardrums to electrical arcs. Both can receive permanent damage.
  • Don’t use a wand in an explosive atmosphere or around flammable chemicals or substances. This includes hairspray and other hair products your partner may have in their hair.
  • Don’t ground yourself or your partner during play. Contacting a pipe, wire or conductive surface that provides a path to the ground can result in more intense and dangerous conditions. Concrete is full of water and rebar which will conduct nicely so don’t stand barefoot on a concrete floor.

I Want A VW: What Should I Look For?

Violet Wands are usually sold in kits. Which kit to purchase It really depends on your style of play – Direct, Indirect and Reverse.

  • Your kit should meet your needs. Violet Wand kits come in a wide variety of configurations. Kits range from case, Violet Wand with one electrode to kits that have more than 50 pieces. Remember that you can ALWAYS add to a basic kit. Look at the materials that are used to make the various accessories that are offered with the Violet Wand. Are they well made from durable materials? Do they rattle? Are they “spark gapped” for your safety.
  • What’s the warranty? Violet Wands are an investment! What is the warranty for the Violet Wand itself? Some manufacturers are happy to “tell” you their warranty, but is it in writing? Understand the warranty terms and conditions.
  • Does your kit come with some instructions? Is there a manual of some sort to answer your basic questions?
